Building for Our Next Chapter: GCTW Announces Board Restructuring

As Girls Code the World prepares to expand its STEM programming, we're reimagining our Board of Directors to bring new perspectives, expertise, and leadership to our next stage of growth.

Since founding Girls Code the World (GCTW) in 2018, our mission has remained the same: to create intentional, inclusive opportunities that help girls build confidence, discover their interests, and envision themselves as future leaders in STEM.

What began as a single educational program has grown into a nonprofit supported by a passionate community of Board members, volunteers, interns, educators, and partners. Together, we've brought hands-on STEM experiences to young people through schools, community organizations, universities, and beyond. Now, as we prepare to launch our Subscription-Based Program (SBP), we're thinking carefully about what it will take to bring our mission to even more families.

That includes reimagining how our organization is led.

Why we're evolving our Board

GCTW has always been a small, hands-on organization, with our Board of Directors playing an important role in both shaping our strategy and bringing our programs to life. As our ambitions grow, so do the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Our new Subscription-Based Program represents an exciting opportunity to make high-quality STEM education more accessible to children beyond the communities we have traditionally served. At the same time, we're working to strengthen how we evaluate our educational impact, build sustainable funding sources, deepen community partnerships, and develop the systems needed to support long-term growth.

To accomplish these goals, we're restructuring our Board of Directors around five areas of expertise that we believe will be critical to GCTW's future.

Our goal is to create a more intentional leadership structure with clearly defined responsibilities, complementary perspectives, and opportunities for Board members to make meaningful contributions. This transition is also an opportunity to strengthen our governance practices, establish clearer expectations for Board service, and welcome new voices into the organization.

Introducing our future Board roles

Over the coming year, we'll begin recruiting for several Board positions, each focused on a different aspect of GCTW's mission and organizational growth.

  • Director of Community & Impact: Deepen our relationships across Philadelphia and South Jersey, strengthen connections with youth development and girls' empowerment organizations, and help us understand and communicate the impact of our programming on participants' confidence, interests, and long-term STEM pathways.

  • Treasurer — Finance & Risk: Guide financial planning, budgeting, and risk management to ensure we're building a financially responsible and sustainable organization as our programs expand.

  • Director of Growth & Operations: Help GCTW build the processes, volunteer and intern structures, and operational capabilities needed to grow sustainably, including supporting the long-term success of our Subscription-Based Program.

  • Director of Education: Bring expertise in youth education, curriculum development, and learning experiences to help ensure our programming remains engaging, inclusive, accessible, and educationally effective.

  • Director of Development: Shape our fundraising strategy, cultivate relationships with donors and corporate partners, and identify philanthropic opportunities that can support our programs and expand access for underserved communities.

Together with our Co-Presidents, these leaders will help guide GCTW's strategy, strengthen our organizational foundations, and ensure that growth translates into meaningful educational opportunities and outcomes.

Our Board recruitment timeline

We're approaching this transition in phases, allowing us to thoughtfully recruit individuals whose expertise, perspectives, and commitment align with our evolving needs.

  • Q4 2026 — Community & Impact: We'll begin by recruiting our Director of Community & Impact, prioritizing candidates with strong connections to the Philadelphia and South Jersey communities and a passion for youth development and girls' empowerment.

  • Q1 2027 — Finance and Operations: We'll open recruitment for our Treasurer and Director of Growth & Operations, two positions focused on strengthening the financial and operational foundations needed to support our next chapter.

  • Q3 2027 — Education, Development, and Additional Leadership: We'll launch our next phase of recruitment, with three additional opportunities anticipated, including our Director of Education and Director of Development positions.

What does serving on our Board look like?

We're looking for people who are passionate about our mission and excited to play an active role in building the future of a growing nonprofit.

Board members can expect to contribute approximately 4–6 hours per month, participate in virtual meetings and occasional in-person gatherings in the Philadelphia area, and serve an initial two-year term. Beyond traditional Board governance, we're seeking collaborative leaders who are eager to share their expertise, build relationships, support fundraising, and help turn ideas into action. Most importantly, we're looking for people who believe in the potential of young people and want to help make STEM education more accessible, meaningful, and empowering.
